Through a personal system of symbolic imagery, I converse with myself, constantly searching to express a balance between the connecting and contrasting realities of my physical, emotional and reasoning being.

Knot Series

Buffalo Arts Studio

Buffalo, NY
September – November, 2001

This is body of prints done in 1990s – and early 2000’s. Many are large prints installed in groupings of 2 to 8 prints. In this series I use a dominating image of an ordinary knotted rope to allow for its strong, tactile and physical nature to inform the work.

Its commonness coupled with its endless, metaphoric implications create a expectation of meaning. In these pieces I explore some less commonplace or personal associations of knots (such as to biological systems and to musical runs) in order to contradict that expectation. In certain of the installations, individual prints, as broken segments of knotted rope, undermine the implied continuity.

In these one-of-a-kind prints, I use a combination of traditional and non-traditional methods of printmaking (drypoint, plate collage elements, direct and expressive ink application. My prints have been labeled “variable relief monoprints” or ‘moveable collagraphs”. Final prints are created from a layering of cut polystyrene, dry point plates and intuitive, expressive inking. My open-ended manner of working provides a mixture of control and freedom that is essential to my work.
